Session 1: Footprints in the Sand: Early Floridians and Spanish Explorers
Thurs, Jan. 6, 2 to 4 p.m.
Participants learn about the pre-Columbian cultures along the Florida peninsula and their interactions with Spanish conquistadors and early colonists. Students will trace the expeditions of Juan Ponce de Leon, Panfilo de Narvaez and Hernando de Soto and learn how a network of Spanish missions from St. Augustine through northern Florida influenced the culture of the Southeastern United States.
Session 2: Colonial Settlements, the American Revolution, Slavery, Civil War and Reconstruction Thurs, Jan. 13, 2 to 4 p.m.
Many flags have flown over the state of Florida: the flags of Spain, England, the United States and the Confederate States of America. In session two, students look at Florida history from the 1720s through the presidential election of 1876. The session also describes Florida’s contributions during the Civil War era and post-war rebuilding.
Session 3: Dreamers, Schemers, Real Estate Booms and Busts Thurs, Jan. 20, 2 to 4 p.m.
The railroad came to Florida in the 1880s and fueled an explosive transformation as land speculators began selling slices of the Florida dream to people up north. Class participants will learn what air conditioning and transportation improvements meant to Florida’s growth and chronicle the most notable historic events in Florida over the last 100 years.
The mini-course is $15 a session ($40 for the entire series) for Pinellas County Historical Society members or $20 a session ($60 for the entire series) for the general public. Checks should be made payable to: Pinellas County Historical Society PO Box 4862, Seminole, FL 33775. Proceeds from the lecture series go to support Heritage Village.
