Thank you cardsoffer an excellent learning opportunity for young children. Sitting down with a parent to construct a message of sincere gratitude in a thank you note to friends and family gives them a chance to practice creativity, etiquette, manners and penmanship all at the same time. Plus, thank you card recipients always appreciate the heartfelt touches that children put on thank you notes, whether it's through an older child writing his or her own message or a younger child decorating a thank you card with stickers and glitter.

It's never too early to teach your children to have good manners and to be thankful for other people's generosity. Learning to be appreciative is an important trait to learn, especially in today's world. But, thank you cards are not just for birthday gifts or holiday gifts. Have your child send out a thank you card to a friend or relative that took the time to create a memorable event, like a sleepover or including them in a vacation. Now is the time to teach your children to be gracious and thankful for the gifts they receive and kind gestures shown to them. What better way then helping them get into the habit of writing thank you notes. We have created thank you cards for your children to be able to send out to grandmas & grandpas, aunts & uncles, friends and teachers. These are perfect to send out for the gifts they receive for their birthdays, holidays, confirmations and other occasions. Also great to send out thanking a friend's parent or relative for a special time such as a sleepover, movie, dinner etc.

AS THE LESSON, PROVIDE THE CHILD WITH AN ORIGINAL HAND-MADE CARD FROM A PARENT OR FAMILY MEMBER. BE SURE THE CHILD HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO RETRIEVE THE CARD FROM THE MAIL BOX. CONDUCT THE FOLLOWING LESSON.
2. AFTER OPENING THE ENVELOPE & LOOKING AT THE CARD ADDRESSED TO THE CHILD, PLACE THE ORIGINAL CARD/ENVELOPE WITH THANKFUL TRAY AT THE WORK STATION. USE PHRASES THAT ENCOURAGE THE CHILD TO EXPRESS FEELINGS UPON RECEIVING THIS ITME OF MAIL. ALLOW CHILD TO EXPRESS THANKS AND OFFER AN OPPORTUNITY TO RETURN A CARD OF THANKS.
3. COPY THE RETURN ADDRESS OFF OF THE ORIGINAL ENVELOPE ONTO THE NEW ENVELOPE (CHILD MIGHT ACCOMPLISH THIS OR REQUEST AID FROM ADULT.)
4. TAKE A SHEET OF COLORED PAPER (HEAVY IS GREAT BUT RECYCLED IS FINE TOO) AND TEAR INTO THIRDS (FOR LEGAL ENVELOPE) OR QUARTERS (FOR GREETING CARD STYLE ENVELOPE) USE THANK YOU CARDS IF STATIONERY IS AVAILABLE, CHILD MIGHT PURCHASE (AT DISCOUNT STORE) OR CREATE OWN STATIONERY BY PRINTING COLOR OR BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOS AS POST CARDS AND WRITE ON THE BACK. ANY NUMBER OF OPTIONS MAY BE AVAILABLE FOR STATIONERY FROM RECYCLED PAPER TO ORDERING PERSONALIZED CARDS... THE POINT SHOULD BE THAT THE CHILD FEELS INVESTED IN THE PROCESS AND MAKING OF THE CARD AS WELL AS THE PRODUCT WHICH WILL BE UTILIZED OVER A PERIOD OF TIME.
YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY MAY HAVE AN EDISON OR DYE CUT MACHINE AND YOU AND THE CHILD MAY CHOOSE A SHAPE FOR THE MONTH OR SEASON; IE CUT SEVERAL PUMPKINS TO SERVE AS CARDS THROUGH THE AUTUMN SEASON. YOU COULD CUT OUT SNOW FLAKES OR SNOW MEN FOR THE WINTER SEASON AND USE THE CHILD'S SCHOOL WORK PAGES AND COLORING PAGES FOR THE SUMMER CARDS. REPURPOSING CARDS IS ALSO POPULAR, JUST TEAR OFF THE COVER OF A CARD AND GLUE ONTO ATTRACTIVE COLORED PAPER. AGAIN, THIS IS ALL DONE BY THE CHILD WHO MIGHT ENJOY CREATING ENOUGH CARDS TO LAST THE MONTH OR THE SEASON!
5. STAMP OR PLACE STICKERS ON THE CARDS WITH SAYINGS SUCH AS 'THANKS A BUNCH' 'THANK YOU' 'YOUR KINDNESS IS APPRECIATED'. ATTEMPT TO PROVIDE OPTIONS THAT EMPHASIZE THE SENTIMENT MORE THAN THE PHYSICAL OR MATERIAL OBJECT. PRACTICE READING SKILLS. INVITE THE CHILD TO SHARE HOW THE ORIGINAL CARD/GIFT MADE HIM OR HER FEEL AND WHY HE OR SHE LIKED THE ITEM/THOUGHT.
6. ASSIST THE CHILD TO COPY THE RECIPIENT'S NAME AT THE TOP AND HIS OR HER NAME AT THE BOTTOM. YOU MAY USE STAMPS OR STICKERS THAT SPELL OUT 'TO' AND 'FROM'. PRACTICE WRITING SKILLS. ALSO, CONSIDER OFFERING LETTER STAMPS OR STICKERS SO THE CHILD CAN OPT TO SPELL OUT NAMES WITHOUT HAVING TO WRITE.
7. PLACE CARD IN THE ENVELOPE, SEAL, STAMP WITH RETURN ADDRESS AND APPROPRIATE POSTAGE
8. TAKE ENVELOPE TO MAILBOX & PUT THE FLAG UP... OR DROP IN BOX OR AT POST OFFICE.

Notes:
This activity is used each year to create personalized party invitations with matching thank you cards. For example for a Space Adventure, a stack of quartered flourescent yellow card stock was included in the tray. Circles of varied size & color were available for children to glue on as planets. Star stickers were also provided. A photo of the Birthday child(ren) was glued in the center along with a printed label detailing the party time, date & rsvp information.
For a Luau a stack of orange paper was included with multi-colored flowers and stickers printed from color printer depicting a favorite Hawiian cast of characters. Again pre-printed labels from the home color printer provided details for the party.
Often, children will gravitate toward this activity tray and create a half dozen cards. By changing the paper color, stickers and stamps, children might create a supply of Birthday Cards in January to be used during the year.
Closing Song:
Blow A Kiss By Lori Berkner Under a Shady Tree
